February 15, 2023 Breakfast Meeting Notes

Tony began with NH Trivia: Notable women of the White Mountain area

50/50 was won by Mike, who requested that the money be donated to the club.

Card game: Bill won the chance to try for the ace of spades, but drew the 6 of hearts.

Super Bowl Squares were won by Walter, Bill, Ken Evans and Nancy.

Nancy, Beth, Sharon, Russ, and Denise volunteered to judge next week’s speech contest. Please be here and settled in by 7 so as to not disturb the speakers.

Our speaker today was Lora, who spoke of her hiking vacation along the Cleveland Way in England in 2005. The Cleveland way is a 110 mile footpath along the edges of the North York Moors National Park. It runs in a horseshoe shape from the village of Helmsley to the city of Filey. Sights included sheep, many panoramic views of the desolate moors and the dramatic cliffs towering over the North Sea, medieval ruins of castles and abbeys, and sheep. Did I mention sheep? Lots of sheep. Anyone who was not present can request the powerpoint from Lora.

Steve then gave us an update on our Rotary foundation. Steve, Susan, and Alex will be going to Ukraine again next Monday. They will visit 6 orphanages this time, bringing food and supplies for warmth. They will also be in Warsaw at the same time as Joe Biden and they hope to get an audience with him (Annie Custer is working on this too).

Our fundraising efforts are getting coverage from the Washington Post, WBZ-TV, and other national media outlets. Be sure to like us on Facebook, Instagram, and your other social media. Please put a tag with your name at the end of your posts that links to Commonmanforukraine.org. You can also post a link to the Rotary Clubs of Warsaw and Zamosc.

The article on our fund in the Rotary magazine has also attracted a lot of attention. Steve and Alex will be Zooming with the Moab Utah Rotary shortly. That club had raised $25,000 for a Ukrainian language school but they encountered regulatory difficulties and so had to abandon that project; they are considering donating that money to CommonmanforUkraine.org instead.  We have had contacts from a large number of Rotary clubs asking for more information, including Plymouth MA, Virginia, and other locations. We had a concert on Saturday at Meredith Congregational church along with a slide show and Alex and Steve yodeling with the church’s bluegrass band. They raised $5000 for the fund.

Respectfully submitted,

Lora Miller, secretary
